Online webinar by the EDCH Community Task Force, as part of the EU-funded AEGIS-OA project | 29 October 2026

As part of its commitment to supporting open scholarly communication and capacity building, TALOS is pleased to share an upcoming webinar organised by the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH) Community Task Force within the EU-funded AEGIS-OA project. The online session, titled “XML in Practice: Tools and Workflows for Journal Editors,” will take place on Thursday, 29 October 2026, from 13:00 to 14:00 CET (14:00–15:00 Greek time, EET).

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is increasingly integral to modern scholarly publishing, supporting article display, metadata exchange, interoperability, and quality control. However, for journal editors new to structured markup, knowing where to start and selecting appropriate tools can be challenging. Drawing on the XML course available on the EDCH training platform, this webinar combines an accessible introduction with practical demonstrations of tools that editors can run independently or directly integrate into Open Journal Systems (OJS).

The session is open to journal editors, editorial teams, and scholarly publishing professionals—whether exploring XML for the first time or seeking to make existing editorial workflows more efficient. No advanced technical background is required.

What will the webinar cover?

The session will focus on three key areas through demonstrations and practical examples:

  • XML in scholarly publishing: An introduction to why and how XML is used, highlighting its role in data exchange, article display, and quality control.
  • Working with JATS XML: A demonstration of the platform-independent JATS XML Converter for creating and editing structured XML files.
  • XML in OJS workflows: An overview of producing and managing XML within Open Journal Systems using the docxConverter and Texture plugins.

There will also be dedicated time for discussion on selecting tools and tailoring XML adoption to each journal’s specific operational needs.

Featured Speakers

  • Maxim Kupreyev, OPERAS
  • Ljiljana Jertec Musap, University of Zagreb University Computing Center (SRCE)
