From Myth to Clay: Visualizing Tragedy on Ancient Greek Vases

We’re happy to feature an invited talk by Dr. Maria Papadopoulou, Assistant Professor at the University of Crete and Visiting Professor at the University of Liaocheng, as part of the TALOS in China – July 2025 events.
In her talk, Dr. Papadopoulou uncovers how Attic vase painters of the classical age reimagined tragic myths through powerful visual storytelling. These ancient vases are more than decorative objects — they serve as condensed theatrical spaces, echoing the drama of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. This talk bridges visual culture, literature, and ancient performance, extending myth from the stage into everyday life in ancient Greece.
📍 Hosted and fully funded by: Liaocheng University, Shandong Province, China.
🗓️ Invited Talk • 3 July 2025, 9:00-11:00 am (UTC +8)
