Echoes of the Past, Engines of the Future: AI & Classics at Crete Past and Present 2025
The Crete Past and Present 2025: Crete on Stage summer school (Division of Classics, UoC) recently hosted a successful and engaging training session on Classics & AI, titled “Echoes of the Past, Engines of the Future.” The workshop, held on June 19 at the Xenia Student Cultural Center in Rethymno, was led by Dr. Maria Papadopoulou and Rafail Giannadakis from the TALOS Lab.
This hands-on session introduced students to the foundations of knowledge graphs and their applications in representing classical texts. Using KGE (Knowledge Graph Editor), a user-friendly tool developed to support symbolic AI in the humanities, students explored how to extract and model structured knowledge from Ancient Greek summaries of tragedies.
Highlights from the session:
- 🧠 A deep dive into symbolic AI, ontologies, and standards for knowledge representation
- 🛠️ Live demonstration of modeling Oedipus Rex as a knowledge graph
- ✍️ Group work where students modeled their own selected tragedies
- 📢 Final presentations and discussions of the resulting graphs
The session exemplified how digital tools and classical scholarship can come together to open new pathways in research, learning, and public engagement.
We thank all participants for their creativity, enthusiasm, and critical insights!
