Abstract

In this video Laura Soffiantini offers a hands-on workshop on the Web Data Technologies.

On Tuesday 12th November, 2024 was held a hybrid hands-on workshop by PhD candidate Laura Soffiantini (KU Leuven). The title of the workshop is: “Scraping Data from the Web. A Tutorial for Ancient Classicists and Ancient Historians”. This tutorial, aimed at students and researchers of classical texts, will demonstrate how to use web scraping to automatically gather and organize textual data from the web into new formats (e.g., compiling all Platonic dialogues from Perseus into a single .txt file). In this session, Laura and the participants created and discussed a Python script designed to search and scrape online databases related to the ancient world.
