Eleni Katsarou

Eleni Katsarou, Ph.D., is Professor of Curriculum Theories and Instruction at the Department of Philosophy and Social Studies, University of Crete, Greece. She graduated from the School of Philosophy at EKPA (University of Athens, B.Sc. 1987), where she also did her postgraduate studies (Ph.D. 1998 and post-doc 2002). She has worked as a teacher in secondary education for more than ten years. She started working at the Higher education in 2000 (23 years now). 

Her current research and publications focus on curriculum studies, teaching theory, educational research (especially action research), literacies, and pre- and in-service teacher education. She is also interested in the teaching of Modern Greek as L1 within the framework of New Literacy Studies. She is the (co)author of many educational materials taught at secondary schools in Greece, of three scientific books that refer to action research and democracy in school and of several articles (more than 60) published in international and Greek journals and volumes on educational action research and its use in teaching, curriculum development and teachers’ professional development. She is scientifically responsible for the practicum of the students of the School of Philosophy (University of Crete) in secondary schools since 2011.   

Currently she participates in the research teams that implement seven projects, five of them funded by E.U., one by national resources (ESPA) and one by the University of Crete. Some of these projects concern teaching and learning in Higher Education and some others focus on making school more just and inclusive. Her more recent projects investigate the complex concept of Artificial Intelligence literacy. Finally, she is a member of the Steering Committee of TALOS-AI4SSH, a member of the UoC Support Team of it, and leader of the Research Topic “Digitalization of Education”.
