Title: “Scraping Data from the Web. A Tutorial for Ancient Classicists and Ancient Historians”.

Abstract: Many ancient texts are available online in digital format, either in their original language or translated, often accompanied by metadata (e.g., author name, work title, date). When we need to analyze these texts, simply reading them online isn’t enough—we need direct access to them on our laptops. This tutorial, aimed at students and researchers of classical texts, will demonstrate how to use web scraping to automatically gather and organize textual data from the web into new formats (e.g., compiling all Platonic dialogues from Perseus into a single .txt file). Together, we will create and discuss a Python script designed to search and scrape online databases related to the ancient world.
Note: No prior Python experience is necessary. Code will be provided to attendees, and no setup is required in advance.

The workshop will be recorded and will be accessible via TALOS YouTube channel.
