Abstract

In this video Alexandros Maridakis is leading a hand-ons hybrid session on GIS tools for Humanities.

On 18th of November, the TALOS Lab organized a hybrid hands-on training led by Alexandros Maridakis (Dept. of History and Archaeology, University of Crete), in the context of the 2025 GIS Day celebrations. The training introduced the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as powerful tools for research and visualization in the Digital Humanities. Through a mix of short theory and guided practice, the workshop showed how spatial data and digital mapping can enhance the study, interpretation, and communication of cultural, historical, and archaeological information. Participants gained hands-on experience with QGIS and ArcGIS to collect, analyze, and visualize spatial data related to cultural heritage, literature, history, and urban studies. Designed for undergraduate students in the humanities and for anyone new to GIS, the workshop bridges technology and critical inquiry and helps participants apply spatial thinking to diverse cultural questions.
